I will work tirelessly to stay informed about the latest changes in the Medicare healthcare markets. I can provide you information on what your market has available right now and any expected changes.
Original Medicare includes both Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance). Those who desire prescription drug coverage are required to join a separate Medicare Drug Plan - Part D.
Original Medicare stipulates that you can choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare in the U.S. When you choose Original Medicare, you could also add Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), Medicaid, or employee or union coverage, to help cover your costs.
Keep in mind that time is of the essence when you become eligible for Medicare drug coverage or Medigap coverage. You may have to pay more if you wait to get these coverages later. These premium penalties could haunt you for the duration of your time on Medicare.
There are two fundamental levels to Medicare that are important to understand: original Medicare and supplemental insurance, or Medigap. Medigap is additional coverage that fills in the gaps left by Original Medicare. Although Medicare pays most costs of the health care services and supplies covered, there are some copayments, coinsurance, or deductible expenses remaining. The right Medigap policy can help ease the burden of some of these health care bills and assist with care even when traveling outside the U.S.
Medicare itself is divided into parts A, B, C and D. Part A covers inpatient care and other hospital costs. This includes medical care in nursing homes, hospice care, and home health services. Part B focuses on two priorities: preventive and outpatient services. Necessary services would be any medical care required prior to diagnosis and treatment of a medical condition. Preventive care is received to prevent illness, like getting a physical or some kind of medical screening.
Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage Plans, which cover all of the same things as part A and B, but these medicare-approved insurance plans can be less expensive. They are offered by private insurance companies and come in the form of HMO and PPO plans. They also offer extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing and gym memberships. Supplemental policies protect your health and give you more control over the kind of provider you get coverage from. Part D covers the cost of prescription drugs.
When you enroll in Original Medicare you will pay a monthly premium for the plan as well as a yearly deductible for both Part A and Part B, as well as coinsurance which is 20% of any medical bills, inpatient or outpatient.
Also, Original Medicare does not provide a prescription drug benefit and if you want this you will need to pay an extra premium for a prescription drug plan. These plans are known as Part D. For some people, these out-of-pocket costs for Original Medicare are still prohibitive and so an alternative plan with lower premiums was created. These plans have smaller or no deductible and no coinsurance costs. These plans are known as Medicare Advantage Plans or Medicare Part C.
Medicare Advantage Plans have lower premiums because they work in particular service areas, meaning that you need to obtain your health care from specific providers and hospitals in specific areas where you live.
Additionally, Medicare Advantage Plans are administered by private insurance companies that contract with the federal government. Your monthly premiums are paid to the private insurance company. Additionally, most Medicare Advantage plans also contain a prescription drug benefit and so you do not need to purchase a separate Part D plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include dental and vision plans as well, and some even have additional services like memberships for gyms or stipends for healthy food delivery
All plans under this insurance coverage include a broad range of prescription drugs typically taken by participants in the Medicare program. The majority of the drugs in the protected classes are covered as well. These include HIV/AIDs and cancer therapy drugs. Most generic drugs are covered by this plan. The Food and Drug Administration categorizes generic drugs as brand-name drugs or those that are similar to brand-name style formulas found in the same categories. This means that the same active ingredients found in brand-name prescription drugs are the ones that will need to be found in drugs covered by this plan. Every plan has its own formulary, which itemizes what particular drugs are included. Most Medicare plans will also place drugs into tier levels on their formularies to show which level of coverage covers which specific drugs. The lower tiers are less expensive than, the higher tiers but also include fewer prescription drugs.
